Diana — Thanks for this thoughtful and helpful response. I’m not sure on your first point that those two options aren’t divergent — many people take them to be, but perhaps that’s not a necessity. On your second point, yes, more non-linear design would likely be helpful (I heard about a “cinnamon bun” approach just today for dealing with cross-cultural communication challenges), but getting some people to move away from the linear will be very difficult.
